BHUBANESWAR: Around 100 people fell ill after having traditional summer drink ‘Pana’ at a religious congregation at Cheliabeda village under Odapada police limits in Dhenkanal district.

They had taken the drinks on Saturday and complained of vomiting and pain in abdomen. When their condition turned serious, they were admitted to a local hospital on Sunday and Monday. Some of them even took home remedy without coming to hospitals.

A villager said they had consumed pana during ‘Sanischar mela’ in the village on Saturday. After drinking it, people felt uneasy and started complaining of pain in abdomen with loose motion. “We thought it will be stopped after a few hours, but the situation went out of control on Sunday. So people rushed to hospital for treatment,” said the villager.

Dhenkanal chief district medical officer Bidyutlata Mishra said it was a case of food poisoning. “We got information regarding food poisoning of around 100 people. We sent a medical team led by additional district medical officer to the village to take stock of the situation. Now the situation is under control,” she added.

She said most of the patients returned home after treatment. “Now 10 patients are undergoing treatment at Odapada health centre and seven others at the district headquarters hospital, Dhenkanal. Condition of the patients is improving,” she added.
It is suspected that the local drink might have been contaminated. Investigation into the matter has been started to ascertain the exact cause, said a medical officer.
