TIRUNELVELI: The demonetisation effect may have had its effect on many, but a restaurant in Tirunelveli set a trend by reaching out to its customers with a humanitarian gesture of offering food with an option of either paying later or for free.
The restaurant, Hotel Sri Balaji, situated on the Tirunelveli RTO premises at NGO Colony put out a board from Wednesday itself stating that customers can have food even if they don’t the have money. This came as a pleasant surprise to many people in the locality who were struggling to get lower denominations. “I have money but all are in 500 or 1000 denominations. It was pleasant surprise when they (hotel management) said I can have food and pay later,” said a youth.
According to locals, Sri Balaji is a new restaurant – established few years ago by two friends – and they have been doing good business with a regular customer base. After the government announcement, they stopped collecting Rs 500 and 1000 denominations but found many of their customers going back unable to pay for the food. So they decided to offer food for free or with a payback option. Anyone having sufficient money can pay for food or can pay later. Even if they don’t come back to pay, it is not a big issue, according to the hotel management .
“We understand that they want to pay for food but could not due to current situation. So the management has decided to announce this arrangement for customers,” a hotel source said.
