Drug-laced chocolates: Notice sent to Collector

Days after a school boy was admitted to a hospital after consuming drug-laced chocolates purchased from a shop in R.K. Nagar and the eventual seizure of such chocolates by officials, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports over the incident and has issued a notice to Chennai Collector over the issue.

Citing media reports, the Commission has observed that it was a “serious threat to the life and safety of the younger generation, mainly the students and teenagers, who can be easily lured by the anti-social elements. Seizure of such a large quantity of drug chocolates in the area also indicates the laxity on the part of the department concerned.”

An official release said that the Commission has asked the Chennai Collector for a report over the matter within four weeks and to further inform about the steps taken to deal with the situation.
